Bell's Science Department is committed to providing students with an active, hands-on approach to science through standards based education. All students at Bell Middle take three years of science.

Each course is a blend of instruction and hands-on laboratory work. All science classes teach the importance of the science process and integrate technology into each course.

Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) Integrated Science: The San Diego Unified School District has adopted the Next Generation Science Standards Integrated Model for Middle Schools. This model is somewhat different from the previous California science standards and makes for an exciting and very different learning environment for students, creating many opportunities for project based learning.

Integrated Science

Grade 6 Science: Focuses on energy and earth's systems including weather and climate patterns, the water cycle and human impacts on the environment. There is also a focus on body systems, cells and genetics. The San Diego Unified School District requires teaching Family Life (introduction to sexual education) in 6th grade.

Grade 7 Science: This class focuses on earth's history, chemical reactions and human impacts on the environment. Topics include history of the earth, plate tectonics erosion, atomic structure and ecosystems.

Grade 8 Science: This class is the capstone of the middle school science sequence. The focus is on earth's place in the universe, Newton's Laws of Motion, and genetics. The San Diego Unified School District requires teaching Family Life (introduction to sexual education) in 8th Grade.

The Next Generation Science Standards for California Public Schools are designed to build upon skills and topics learned in earlier grades. Information about the NGSS standards can be found at:
